Emily in Paris: Did I just get to experience Paris in quarantine?

Writer: The Confessioner The Confessioner

So I, like many people of my generation, cannot afford a trip to visit Paris. And it happens that with the craziness that happened in 2020, I would have not been able to visit even if I wanted to. Which kinda sucks but Paris isn't on the top of my list anyway. I would like to go one day but other European countries have my interest and going to South Korea is like a dream. Wait a minute, let me get back to talking about Paris before y'all get a very detailed list of every place I want to go. So, I did get the option to experience it from the comfort of my home. How is that possible you ask? Well, let me tell you. Have you heard of the Netflix original Emily in Paris? It is a 10 episode comedy-drama, which I am happy to say got renewed for a second season, that follows Emily Cooper as she is thrown into the job at a marketing firm in Paris after her boss could not longer relocate. We see her battle love, work problems, culture clashes, and anything else that you think a 20something-year-old woman who doesn't speak the language could experience in Paris. Now, I know that this was a dramatized version of Paris to fit the needs of the show and could be very unrealistic. But isn't it the same with most entertainment? To not take it with a fine grain of salt but just something for people to enjoy, unless it's cultural appropriation, which should be taken with a fine grain of salt and never allowed! But back to the review. I saw Emily in Paris in my catalogue for a while on Netflix until I randomly decided to watch it. The lead actress was also Lily Collins, who I am a fan of so I knew that I needed to at least give it a try I was upset at first to see each episode was about half an hour but once I saw the pacing I understood how it was for the best. Now, we see the protagonist Emily trying to navigate being successful a work while also trying to make sure that everyone likes her. We see her constantly go against the orders of her boss to do what she believes to be right. When we think that she is finally going to see the consequences of her action, the problem always gets to be resolved. Very unrealistic in real life but nice for a character you don't want to see fail. That's TV for her. We also see her trying to fight the budding relationship that she has built with her very attractive neighbour which has its own problems. I don't want to spoil anything but as a viewer, all I can say is "this is really the best thing they can think of to do in this situation". I can't wait to see how things go for them in season two. Now that I am thinking about it as I write this, I don't think we ever got a scene that did not include Emily in it or where she wasn't close by about to join in. I remember this happening in one episode where she was away on a trip, but this was only for a few moments. I believe this show could have gone farther by letting us get to know the characters outside of Emily. Letting us build a connection to them as a person, and not only when Emily is with them. But I guess it really wouldn't be Emily in Paris without Emily. But something can still happen. Hopefully, we see more character growth in season two. But there is one thing that I loved so much about the show that if I did not talk about it I believe this review could not be completed.

That is the FASHION! Not only was Emily's exquisite in every episode not matter if she was going to work, to a café, or just shopping, but every character had something that I would want in my closet. Like forget experiencing Paris, can I have your wardrobe please. Like not only were the people and environment beautiful, they really had to do a full circle by including clothes. During a time where my wardrobe consisted mostly of Adidas sweats, it was nice to live vicariously through the cast. So if you want a show that you can either intensively watch or just have on in the background as you do whatever it is that you like to do, no judge zone here, I would recommend Emily in Paris. The cast really grows on you in the short 10 episodes and the storyline is interesting enough to keep you, well..... interested. To me, this was was anything but "ringarde"(watch the show to get what the means).
