Little Monsters was a 2019 film that starred the beautiful Lupita Nyong'o and her leading man, Alexander England. It was a horror-comedy film about a teacher, (Nyong'o) and former musician(England), who is also the uncle of one of her students, who try to protect a group of children from a zombie outbreak during a field trip. Now, I have never been a person to turn down a zombie film. They are my favourite post-apocalyptic genre and I have seen too many to even keep track of. I hope that this thorough knowledge will help me in the future(if you know what I mean). But let's get back on topic. Besides Zombieland and now currently Shaun of the Dead, this was one of the first zombie films that I have seen where there has been a lot of comedy. I usually stick to the more serious ones as while I like comedies, I don't really like them that much during disastrous situations. I watched Little Monsters the day that It premiered with my roommate and I have something to say about that night. I HAD SUCH A LAUGH! While it was a zombie film, I never felt that that was the main component of it. There were so many hilarious scenarios with and without zombies to where I spent most of the film laughing. The chemistry that each of the actors had with each other made it no better. Everyone went together so well with the comedy that I sometimes forgot that the zombies were even there. I feel that if they were the leave out much of the comedy that was in it, I believe I would have not liked it that much. And this is coming from a person who just said that they do not like disastrous comedies! But besides the comedy, I also liked the character relationships and the development we saw. We went from seeing Dave(England) be the selfish, foul-mouthed, lazy musician to a man that learns to commit and put others before himself while also trying to save his nephew Felix and the other children.
Also, while I'm on that note, can we talk about how adorable Felix was. Every scene that he was in made my day. He to this day has been my favourite character. He was a sweet, soft-spoken, polite, tractor loving little boy who loved his uncle. And let's not forget is iconic Darth Vader moment(which made me love him even more). Also Josh Gad's character, the voice of Olaf, was a whole mood on his own. All in all this film showed me how a zombie film's main plotline does not have to be about the zombies. That the zombies could be a subplot that adds to the story but doesn't need to make the story. I hope that I can find more horror-comedy films that like one that I will change my opinion on movies like this. Who knows, maybe after a few more I'll join the dark side of horror-comedy (I hope you got what I was trying to do).
